Massage Therapy License Requirements

Massage therapy is all about relaxation and stress relief, but in order to achieve those two results, one must enroll in a program that covers the massage therapy license requirements—and a great career in the wellness industry.

In order to become employed as a professional massage therapist, you must fulfill these basic massage therapy requirements: you must pass coursework in a variety of classes including anatomy and physiology and kinesiology, among other health and medical related topics; you must complete several hundred hours of clinical practice under the tutelage of an instructor or professional massage therapist; and you must pass the licensure tests and obtain whatever other mandatory certification necessary to work in the particular state or region in which you reside.

  • However, a classroom education, practical experience in a student clinic, and licensure are not the only massage therapy requirements. A good tableside (or chairside) manner is essential for a massage therapist, especially if you are looking to keep a roster of regular clients and add more from time to time. Successful massage therapists are friendly and respectful to their clients, being sure to accommodate any special needs that they might have, such as light vs. heavy pressure of massage strokes. Contrary to popular belief, it is possible to give a bad massage in that it can cause more discomfort than relaxation. If you are not willing to communicate with your clients to make sure that each and every session is as relaxing and therapeutic as it can be, then perhaps a career in the wellness industry is not the right choice for you.

Many individuals who enter the massage therapy profession do so because they are inspired to help others obtain an optimal state of wellness, and a good massage can certainly help in that effort. The desire to help others live healthfully will be enough to help guide you through all of the massage therapy requirements and into a rewarding career as a massage therapist.
